The Rt. Hon. Peter Hain MP,
Leader of the House of Commons


The main duty of the Leader of the House is the handling of the business of the House, in particular the progress of the Government's legislative programme.

The Leader reports regularly to Cabinet on Parliamentary business and the legislative programme. In his capacity as Leader of the House, he is a member of the Public Accounts Commission and of the House of Commons Commission, and also chairs the Select Committee on Modernisation of the House. 

Mr Hain chairs the Cabinet Committee on the Legislative Programme (LP), whose role is to determine the Government's legislative priorities, including the content of the Queen's Speech, to monitor and review the legislative programme during the Parliamentary year, and to consider the Parliamentary handling of Government Bills

He is also chair of the following two Committees: Electoral Policy (MISC24) and the Government's response to Parliamentary Modernisation (MISC21)

As Lord Privy Seal, he is Trustee of the Chevening Estate.
